Dr. Dominique De Clercq (DVM - PhD - publications - Dipl.ECEIM) is an EBVS European recognized internist specialist - cardiology specialist for horses. You can contact her for routine clinical- and specialized exams at your location. She is specialized in non orthopedic performance problems.
Ambulatory consultations
Does your horse have a heart murmur? It is then recommended to perform an echocardiography (heart scan) and an exercise test with an electrocardiogram (ECG) to determine whether it is safe to ride the horse. With an echocardiography, we check whether the heart is normally shaped, functions corectly, and assess the severity of any valve leaks.
You no longer need to go to a clinic for a heart examination of your horse. The echocardiography (heart scan) and exercise test with electrocardiogram can take place right at your home.
A heart examination is carried out on-sit throughout Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Luxembourg.

If your horse suffers from a persistent or recurring cough, it is recommended to perform an endoscopy (camera examination) of the airways. Know that the cause of coughing is not always simply asthma. During this examination, samples are taken for microscopic and bacteriological analysis. Subsequently, a customized treatment plan is drawn up for your horse.
In some cases, an ultrasound of the lungs might be recommended. This is discussed on a case-by-case basis.
Lung examinations are carried out on-site throughout Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Luxembourg.
Stomach (gastroscopy) - and exams of the intestines (absorption tests, echography)

Is your horse too thin or too fat? If you suspect that your horse has stomach ulcers, a digestive problem, or insulin resistance, the appropriate examinations can be carried out at home.
For a stomach examination (gastroscopy), your horse must be fasted for at least 12 hours. After administering of a light sedation, we will use a camera to inspect the stomach and small intestine.
For both a too thin and a too fat horse, via digestive tests we can determine whether a malabsorption syndrome or insulin resistance is present. Be aware that a too thin horse might suffer from an advanced stage of insulin resistance.
Examinations of the stomach and intestines are conducted on-site throughout Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Luxembourg.

We are all now aware that an annual dental check-up (just like with us) is also necessary for horses. A healthy horse goes hand in hand with a healthy set of teeth. During this examination, a few corrections are usually made on the chewing surface. These adjustments are done to try to prevent more serious problems (e.g., fractures) in the long term. During the examination, an oroscopy (camera examination) is sometimes performed. Via this technique, we can clearly visualize the problem.
Dental examinations are carried out within a radius of 20 km from the practice.
Exams of the liver and kidneys

A blood test shows that the liver values are abnormal. A targeted medical history and an inspection of the environment (toxic substances, diet, presence of other animals....) is very important in addressing a liver problem. An ultrasound of the liver can sometimes reveal the cause of the liver problem (abscess, blocked bile ducts, stones or grit, swollen inflamed liver, tumor,...). Horses can exceptionally have a kidney problem. Ultrasound of the kidneys, with or without combined endoscopy of the urinary tract, can be valuable in addressing the cause of the problem.

As an EBVS European recognized internal medicine specialist (Dipl. ECEIM), I am the appropriate person to give you recommendations on internal problems of your horse. Both a routine blood test and specialized examinations can be conducted and discussed. Subsequently, a customized treatment plan is drawn up for your horse.
Is your horse lame or suffering from laminitis, or is there a suspicion of a neck problem? Then it may be advisable to perform radiography at home. We have a digital mobile radiography device. Therefore, recordings can be made at your home.
This examination is carried out within a radius of 20km around the practice.
We do not perform X-rays as part of a pre-purchase exam.

In some horses, you can see the worms directly in the manure, but in most cases, a worm problem is not always visible to the naked eye. The eggs of the worms can only be detected through specialized manure testing. There are different types of worms, each of which requires a tailored approach to achieve a good result. The test is conducted 'in-house' so that we have quick results. You can send your horse's manure by post (well packaged 😊) or bring it to the practice for further examination.

Eyes are very delicate. If you notice anything abnormal about your horse's eyes, it is best to have it investigated. An ophthalmological examination and ultrasound of the eye can provide us more information. Subsequently, an individualized treatment plan is drawn up.
